When Standard Life acquired Dundas House it comprised a grade B listed building and a 1970’s building clad in yellow concrete brick and topped with a false mansard roof. Standard Life were keen to ‘recycle’ the building rather than to demolish and redevelop, this being seen not only as a benefit in terms of programme but also to be a ‘greener’ approach to providing space.
The solution to the low floor to floor heights of 3.0m has been to use a 65mm raised floor and active chilled beam and integrated lighting units, incorporating smoke detectors and emergency lighting. The beams are designed to permit partitions to be inserted, and coordinated with the space planning and window mullion module.
Of the completed building, Standard Life say: "BDG McColl the architects and interior designers have succeeded in translating Standard Life’s Design Brief into a world class working environment which is stunning but at the same time practical and operationally efficient."
Dundas House won British Council for Offices 'Best Corporate Workplace, Scotland' in 2003.
